If You Lost Your Job Tomorrow Could You Survive A Month On Your Savings?

Most people cannot answer this question. Not because they are careless, but because nobody ever taught them how. Your Survival Number is the total amount of money you need to cover one full month of essential living costs if all income stopped tomorrow.

It is not your ideal budget. It is not what you spend on a comfortable month. It is the bare minimum: rent or mortgage, utilities, food, transport, insurance, minimum debt payments, and any non-negotiable care costs. Everything else is optional in a genuine emergency.

To calculate it, add every essential bill for one month. Do not round down to make yourself feel better and do not round up out of anxiety. Use real numbers from your last three months of statements. The truth is the starting point.

Once you know the number, you know exactly how much of a buffer you need to build. One month is the first milestone. Three months is stability. Six months is freedom. Most people aim for three months of Survival Number in a separate, accessible account.

This is the S in the STABLE Framework: See The Number. You cannot fix a problem you have never measured. Work out your Survival Number this week and write it down. Everything else in your financial plan flows from that single figure.
